IStructE, an internationally distinguished learned society, and Engineers Australia have signed a Mutual Recognition Agreement that is intended to facilitate closer professional links between the two institutions. The agreement assists in advancing the quality of structural engineering practice worldwide. ?

We all know that only architects can use the title "Architect", but there is no such restriction on the title "Engineer", or even "Structural Engineer".

Members of the IStructE have the exclusive entitlement to use the professional title 'Chartered Structural Engineer'.

Chartered Membership Examination

To become corporate members of the IStructE, practicing structural engineers must pass the Institution's Chartered Membership Examination (CME), a 7 hour examination in structural engineering design and practice. The examination is held in April each year (Thursday 28 April for 2011 CME). Most candidates need careful planning and preparation for this examination. There are evening classes available in the UK to help candidates, and there may be some in Melbourne. A valuable alternative to the classes are co-operatives of structural engineers who are serious about preparing for the exam. The past CME papers are now available for download from Headquarter website (click here for the direct link). More on latest examination news is available here.

Chartered Membership Examination Preparation Course in Melbourne

The Institution of Structural Engineers - Victoria Group started hosting a Chartered Membership Examination preparation course since 2009. We believe that membership of the Institution of Structural Engineers is a very worthwhile achievement for structural engineers. Only members of the IStructE can call themselves "Chartered Structural Engineers". It is a worthwhile achievement, and the Victorian Group are setting up a course to help candidates with the 7 hour examination.

We hosted again for the third year the 2011 CME preparation course. We had 13 attendees this year. The course finished on 12th April providing feedback for those who sat the trial exam on 26th March. We have 6 candidates sitting the CME on 28th April this year. Good luck and we look forward to welcoming you as Chartered Structural Engineers!

50-year membership certificated presented to Dr John Connell

Victoria Group representative, Dr David Morris took the honour of presenting the certificate and he reports, "he was absolutely delighted, and emphasised that he treasured his membership of IStructE above all others. He took his CME in 1958, and it was not fashionable back then to take it. He volunteered that it is the only professional qualification he has ever needed, and he has taken it around the world. What a testimony!"

Victoria Group hosted a dinner to honour Dr John Connell's achievement. It was held on 11 June 2010 at University House at University of Melbourne. Invitations were distributed to members and his ex-colleagues (as many as we could obtain contact details) with a short notice due to John's availability and we had 19 attendees on the night. John's speech is uploaded below for those who could not attend. Or link to the video uploaded on YouTube here.
